Invention of a Christian Nation

Our religious national identity is and always has been constantly changing. Our national spiritual consciousness is and always has been ever evolving. That identity, that consciousness is dynamic. It never has been and hopefully never will be static. Two recent events illustrate this. First, the Supreme Court decision to validate same sex marriage elicits intense reactions by us citizenry. A county clerk in Tennessee announced she and all her staff were quitting. She and her staff all believe that that ruling goes against her and her staff’s beliefs about Biblical teachings about marriage. It especially goes against the Biblical definition of marriage. I wish I could ask them a question. Which definition of Biblical marriage do they hold to to? Is it the Biblical definition which says a wife is the property of her husband? The one that says she must obey her husband and submit to his will at all times? That’s the one that informed my officiating at my first wedding...
