During this month of July, we are looking into the question of our nation’s religious identity. We are asking what our American spiritual consciousness is all about. Discerning all that takes some effort. Our religious origins are complex. Next Sunday we will explore some of those origins. Invention of a Christian Nation

Our religious national identity is and always has been constantly changing. Our national spiritual consciousness is and always has been ever evolving. That identity, that consciousness is dynamic. It never has been and hopefully never will be static. Two recent events illustrate this. First, the Supreme Court decision to validate same sex marriage elicits intense reactions by us citizenry. A county clerk in Tennessee announced she and all her staff were quitting. She and her staff all believe that that ruling goes against her and her staff’s beliefs about Biblical teachings about marriage. It especially goes against the Biblical definition of marriage. I wish I could ask them a question
